Nimba Senator Nya Tweyen has echoed calls to the Government of Liberia through the Inter Ministerial Committee on Concession (IMCC) to keenly evaluate ArcelorMittal Mineral Development Agreement (MDA) before taking a decision to renew the company’s contract.
Senator Nya said, the company has not been able to meet up with previous agreements since its operations in Liberia.
According to the Nimba Senator if ArcelorMittal MDA should be extended, the Government should make it binding for the company to pave road leading from Sanniquellie to Yekepa, increase Social Development Fund to Nimba and affected Counties and Cease the Constructions of Containers in favor of renovating the homes in Yekepa.
Senator Twayen stressed that Government should enforce a non-negotiable clause mandating the appointment of at least one Liberian among the top three executive leadership positions.
He argued that before any new agreement , ArcelorMittal should be made to pay the arreas owed to the shalorships fund which would lead to the awardance of schalorships to more students and establish a transparent, monitored fund for scholarships and community development and ensure AML fulfills its social obligations.
He also wants the agreement to Institute a quarterly progress audits of AML’s compliance with the MDA, to be reviewed publicly by the Legislature and affected communities.
Meanwhile, Senator Twayen is at the same time pushing for ArcelorMittal to abolish Transfer Pricing strategy and declare profit; Timely and transparent Financial Reporting to government.
