Lofa County Senator Momo Cyrus has called for peaceful and respectful dialogue in addressing issues void of violence.

According to him, the protesters have some good concerns but using violence will not help the process.

Speaking to reporters at the grounds of the Capitol Building Senator Cyrus strongly condemned what he described as the “unorthodox and uncivilized behavior” exhibited by protesters during a demonstration held on July 17, 2025, at Capitol Hill in Monrovia.

He told reporters that the Senate Pro Tempore, Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence officially designated him to receive a petition from the group of demonstrators on behalf of the Liberian Senate.

However, upon his arrival at the protest site, the demonstrators refused to hand over the petition, rejecting his authority and instead resorting to violence.

The situation quickly escalated when some individuals within the crowd began hurling stones at the Lofa County lawmaker, forcing him to retreat without fulfilling his assigned duty.

Speaking to journalists shortly after the incident, Senator Cyrus expressed deep disappointment over the actions of the protesters, stating that their conduct was not only inappropriate but also undermined the very principles of democracy that they claimed to be advocating for.

“What happened here today is unacceptable and goes against the tenets of democracy. While every citizen has the right to protest and to make their voices heard, it must be done in a peaceful and respectful manner,” Senator Cyrus told reporters.

He further emphasized the importance of maintaining civility and mutual respect during public engagements, especially when interacting with elected officials who are open to dialogue and constructive criticism.

Senator Cyrus has called on the protest organizers to reflect on their approach and to seek more productive ways to engage with national leaders, noting that violence and aggression only serve to widen the gap between the people and their representatives.
