A heartbreaking incident has rocked the communities of Daeyahn and Boeglay Towns, as a tragic train accident reportedly claimed the life of Philip Wheagar, a 53-year-old officer with the Plant Protection Department (PPD) of the Liberian Agricultural Company (LAC).
Wheagar’s lifeless body was discovered early Friday morning on the railway tracks. Eyewitnesses say he appeared severely injured, with his head badly damaged, his back slashed, and a deep cut on his left hand — injuries consistent with a high-impact collision.
A local jury’s preliminary findings indicate that an ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) train may have been responsible for the fatal impact. The jury reported signs of trauma typically caused by a train strike.
The incident has left the entire community in mourning. Wheagar’s family took custody of his remains for embalming today as they prepare for final rites. Meanwhile, discussions between the family and AML are ongoing as they seek answers about what transpired.
This tragedy has reignited concerns about safety along railway lines in Grand Bassa and surrounding areas. Residents are urging authorities and the company to step up precautions to prevent such devastating accidents.
