The Liberia National Red Cross Society (LNRCS) River Gee Chapter Field
Officer Matthew Wesseh has urged community leaders and members to embrace the principles
of humanity.
Commemorating the World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day over the weekend, Wesseh
said community members and local leaders must accept the core values of the Red
Cross, such as serving humanity, impartiality,
neutrality, independence, voluntary service unity and universality.
The celebration held under the theme: “On the Side of Humanity, Red
Cross is Always There.” It was held
in Dwehken, Gbeapo Statutory District, which brought together local leaders,
community members, and volunteers in honor of the legacy of Red Cross founder
Henry Dunant and to recognize the efforts of humanitarian workers worldwide.
The Red Cross River Gee Chapter Field Officer acknowledged the work of volunteers
and their dedication and selfless service, highlighting their role in responding
to emergencies and supporting vulnerable communities across the county.
“everything we do as a society, especially in health care, disaster
response, and social support, the principle of humanity must guide us, the Red
Cross stands ready, always, to support those in need,” he added.
The event also provided a platform for local voices to share how Red Cross
interventions have impacted their lives. Speaking to reporters, Ma Esther Toe,
a 46-year-old resident of Dwehken, expressed appreciation for the
organization’s outreach.
“We are thankful for the Red Cross. On behalf of the women in this
community, we are always willing to work with any group that is helping
people,” Toe said.
The program concluded with a renewed commitment from the River Gee Chapter
to strengthen its humanitarian efforts and deepen collaboration with local
communities.
World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day is marked annually in over 190
countries to celebrate the humanitarian work inspired by Henry Dunant’s
founding vision. The day remains a reminder of the importance of compassion and
community solidarity in responding to local and global challenges.
