The Ministry of Public Works has signed a contract with BK Enterprise, a Liberian-owned company, for the rehabilitation of all roads and pedestrian walkways throughout Monrovia.

According to a release issued today, the agreement seeks to enhance accessibility within the city and improve safety by ensuring pedestrians can use designated walkways, keeping them off main roads.

The project is part of a broader effort to restore Monrovia’s infrastructure, making it more resilient and aesthetically pleasing.

Work will include patching potholes, restoring critical sections of roadway, asphalt overlays, and reconditioning pedestrian walkways.

Funding for this vital project comes from the Liberia Urban Resilience Project, or LURP, a World Bank-sponsored initiative managed by the Ministry of Public Works.

LURP Project Manager Gabriel Flabboe emphasized the importance of a resilient city, reiterating LURP’s commitment to supporting Ministry endeavors that enhance Monrovia’s appearance.

Boakai Kollie, CEO of BK Enterprise, applauded Minister Roland Layfette Giddings and his team for prioritizing Liberian companies in national development.

Mr. Kollie stated that his company views this as more than just a business venture, but a national duty.

For his part, Public Works Minister Roland Layfette Giddings thanked the World Bank for financing these initiatives through the Liberia Urban Resilience He stressed the importance of empowering competent, trustworthy, and integrity-driven Liberian companies.

However, Minister Giddings also issued a caution, stating that while empowering local businesses is a goal, any contract not meeting its terms and conditions will be terminated.

In related news, the Ministry of Public Works has also issued a temporary moratorium on heavy goods vehicles to protect unpaved roads during the rainy season.

The Ministry of Public Works, exercising its mandate to protect national infrastructure and ensure road safety, has announced a temporary ban on heavy goods vehicles exceeding 25 metric tons — that’s including both cargo and vehicle weight — on key unpaved primary road corridors.

This measure, effective from July 31st to October 15th, 2025, aims to preserve critical road networks, enhance safety, and reduce rapid deterioration caused by overloaded vehicles during the vulnerable rainy season.

The moratorium applies to several key routes, including Ganta to Zwedru, Zwedru to Kanweaken, Buchanan to Greenville, Pleebo to Barclayville, Salayea to Mendikorma, and Brewerville to Bopolu.
