President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr. has formally requested the convening of a Special Session of Liberia’s 55th Legislature to address pressing national concerns, according to an official communication sent to House Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon.

The proposed session is scheduled to run for ten working days, beginning April 9 and ending April 23, 2026.

The President’s action is in line with Article 32(b) of the Liberian Constitution, which grants the authority to convene or extend legislative sittings in cases of national urgency.

The move follows the Legislature’s adjournment on March 19, 2026, after completing its first-quarter agenda, with regular sittings originally set to resume on May 8.

However, the Executive has cited the urgency of several critical national matters as justification for reconvening lawmakers ahead of schedule.

Key issues outlined for deliberation during the Special Session include the proposed printing of additional Liberian dollar banknotes, consideration and passage of the 2026 supplementary budget, and other time-sensitive matters deemed vital to national stability.

According to the President, delaying action on these issues could negatively impact economic management and governance, making immediate legislative intervention necessary.

President Boakai also expressed confidence that members of the Legislature will respond promptly and act in the national interest during the special sitting.

The move signals the administration’s intent to ensure fiscal responsiveness and maintain economic stability amid growing national demands.

Meanwhile, Speaker Koon has acknowledged receipt of the President’s communication and has directed the Chief Clerk’s office to proceed with notifying the President for the formal issuance of a proclamation.
