The Liberia National Police (LNP) have arrested and sent to jail Liberian economist and politician Samuel Jackson, considered a person of interest in the death of his wife, South African national Tonia Jackson.

Tonia’s death has sparked public concern and raised questions about possible domestic violence.Madam Jackson was the wife of Liberian economist Samuel Jackson, who announced her death on Friday, March 13, 2026.

Shortly after the announcement yesterday, state security officers surrounded the couple’s residence in the Old Road community, an unusual development that quickly drew attention from residents and the public.

Addressing journalists late Friday, spokesperson for the Liberia National Police, Sam Collins, disclosed that investigators discovered bruises and lacerations on the body of the deceased during a preliminary examination, something that have led to his arrest.

According to the police, the examination was conducted by a team of investigators in collaboration with representatives from the Embassy of South Africa in Liberia.

Police spokesperson, Collins said that early findings suggest the death may involve homicide linked to possible domestic assault. He emphasized that the case remains under active investigation and called for full cooperation from all individuals connected to the matter.

The information from the Police Intelligence Bureau indicated that Mr. Jackson initially hesitated to appear before investigators to respond to questions regarding the circumstances surrounding his wife’s death.

As a result, officers were deployed to his residence to secure the scene and facilitate the investigation.Collins confirmed that Mr. Jackson and two other individuals have been identified as persons of interest in the case.

Madam Jackson, a South African citizen who had been married to Mr. Jackson for several years, reportedly lived with her husband in the Old Road community of Monrovia.

In a media engagement early Saturday, Mr. Jackson denied any wrongdoing and explained that his initial reluctance to cooperate with police investigators was due to what he described as attempts to politicize the death of his wife.

He also criticized the heavy presence of state security at his residence, describing it as intimidating and unnecessary.

Despite those concerns, Mr. Jackson said he remains willing to cooperate with investigators from the Liberia National Police and provide all relevant documents and evidence related to his wife’s death.

He further disclosed that prior to her passing, he had contacted the Embassy of South Africa in Liberia to inform officials about his wife’s illness and her subsequent death.

Meanwhile, photos circulating on social media showing alleged bruises on the body of Madam Jackson have intensified public speculation about the circumstances surrounding her death.

Police, however, are urging the public to remain calm and allow investigators to complete their work before drawing conclusions.Authorities say further forensic examinations and interviews will be conducted as part of efforts to determine the exact cause of death.
