The Liberia National Police (LNP) has rejected allegations contained in a communication reportedly authored by Jefferson T. Koijee and addressed to the United States Embassy Monrovia, describing the claims as misleading and lacking factual basis.
In a statement issued Tuesday, the LNP said while it respects the constitutional right of citizens to raise concerns, the assertions made by Koijee omit key facts surrounding ongoing investigations and accountability mechanisms within the police force.
The institution maintained that the allegations do not accurately reflect its operational procedures or reform efforts.
The police authority also highlighted what it termed a “credibility gap” in the claims, pointing to Koijee’s past sanction by the United States Government over allegations related to undermining democratic processes and abuse of public office.
According to the LNP, this context raises questions about the intent and reliability of the accusations.
Responding to claims of institutional inaction, the LNP outlined its internal accountability structures, noting that all custodial deaths undergo mandatory review and may be referred for judicial proceedings when necessary.
The LNP statement further noted that allegations of police misconduct are investigated by its Professional Standards Division, while incidents involving the use of force are assessed under established legal and operational frameworks.
The LNP has clarified that its role is limited to investigation, emphasizing that prosecutorial decisions fall under the authority of the Ministry of Justice Liberia, in line with national laws.
Additionally, the institution categorically rejected accusations of systemic torture, links to drug cartels, and politically motivated violence, describing them as unfounded and inconsistent with ongoing reforms and international partnerships aimed at strengthening professionalism within the force.
The LNP has pledged its continued commitment to upholding the rule of law, protecting human rights, and maintaining transparency in its engagements.
It also cautioned against what it described as attempts to undermine public confidence through politically charged narratives lacking substantive evidence.
