In a formal diplomatic ceremony held on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, four newly accredited ambassadors presented their Letters of Credence to Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., President of Liberia, marking the official start of their respective missions in one of Africa’s historically significant republics.
The event, conducted in the Parlors of the Executive Mansion in Monrovia, reaffirmed Liberia’s continued commitment to fostering robust international partnerships rooted in mutual respect, economic cooperation, peace and sustainable development.
The new envoys and their countries of accreditation were:
Gaston Gakosso, Ambassador of the Republic of Congo
Alberto Efrain Castelar Padilla, Ambassador of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela
Bambang Suharto, Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia
Martin Podstavek, Ambassador of the Slovak Republic
These presentations come as part of routine diplomatic protocol, yet carry added significance as Liberia continues to elevate its global engagement following its return, in January 2026, to the United Nations Security Council as a non-permanent member, the first time in more than 60 years the West African republic serves in that capacity.
President Joseph Nyuma Boakai speaking at the ceremony extended a warm welcome to the ambassadors and accepted their credentials on behalf of the Government and People of Liberia, framing the occasion as an opportunity to renew longstanding partnerships and expand avenues of international cooperation.
“Liberia remains committed to deepening ties with all nations represented here today, and to leveraging diplomatic engagement to support peace, prosperity, and shared progress,” President Boakai said.
In their individual remarks, the newly accredited ambassadors outlined strategic priorities for bilateral cooperation:
Ambassador Gaston Gakosso reaffirmed the Republic of Congo’s strong commitment to strengthening trade and commerce with Liberia, emphasizing investment promotion and economic self-reliance as key focal points.
Ambassador Alberto Efrain Castelar Padilla highlighted Venezuela’s interest in cooperation in energy, agriculture, education, health, and cultural exchange underscoring a readiness to collaborate on initiatives that support sustainable development.
Ambassador Bambang Suharto emphasized Indonesia’s commitment to supporting Liberia’s development through investment in palm oil production, infrastructure, capacity building, technical assistance and scholarship programs.
Ambassador Martin Podstavek underlined the Slovak Republic’s intent to deepen ties through expanded collaboration in trade, investment, tourism, and cultural exchange to bolster mutual economic growth.
President Boakai pledged Liberia’s full support to the new ambassadors, expressing confidence that their tenures will broaden strategic bilateral engagements in trade, investment, education and security cooperation.
Liberia’s Diplomatic Engagement and Historical Legacy
Liberia, Africa’s oldest republic founded in 1847, has leveraged its unique historical identity and longstanding membership in international institutions to cultivate global partnerships.
As a founding member of the United Nations and now a re-elected non-permanent member of the UN Security Council (2026–2027), the country’s diplomatic activities continue to gain international relevance.
Under President Boakai’s leadership elected in late 2023 and sworn in early 2024, the Liberian government has demonstrated a proactive foreign policy.
In previous years, multiple foreign envoys have presented credentials, reinforcing Liberia’s diplomatic outreach across continents.
For example, in 2024 President Boakai received seven ambassadors from Europe, Africa and Asia in similar ceremonies at the Executive Mansion.

Foreign affairs analysts suggest that such high-level credentialing events are more than ceremonial: they are strategic platforms for opening new chapters of cooperation that can enhance bilateral trade, educational exchange programs, cultural diplomacy, and technical partnerships.

As Liberia continues to navigate complex global dynamics, the commencement of duties by these four ambassadors may serve as a catalyst for deeper economic linkages and collaborative endeavors that support national prosperity and regional cooperation.
