Liberia, one of Africa’s oldest republics and a nation historically rooted in principles of freedom, justice, and refuge , reaffirmed its legacy of offering protection to those in distress.
From African freedom fighters to advocates of democracy, Liberia has long stood as a safe haven for individuals facing persecution.
By agreeing to host Abrego Garcia, the Government signals its readiness to act responsibly within international humanitarian norms, while emphasizing that the arrangement remains temporary, lawful, and transparent.
The Government of Liberia, through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has confirmed that coordination with the U.S. Department of State will continue to ensure all commitments are fully honored.
The process will be conducted in close collaboration with Liberian security, immigration, and justice agencies, alongside international partners, ensuring maximum safeguards for both national interests and humanitarian integrity.
Key safeguards include: Comprehensive security screening and vetting before and upon arrival, Respect for due process and human rights, ensuring access to legal and procedural protections, Non-refoulement guarantees, prohibiting return to any country where risk of persecution or harm exists and
Engagement with the United Nations and other partners to explore lawful, durable resettlement or transfer solutions.
Liberia has emphasized that this decision was taken voluntarily, in good faith, and solely on humanitarian grounds, not under compulsion or external pressure.
The Government has welcomed the acknowledgment and cooperation of the United States in facilitating this sensitive humanitarian gesture.
