Liberia and France have taken steps to deepen their diplomatic and development cooperation following the signing of a new General Cooperation Agreement in Paris on Wednesday.
The agreement broadens collaboration across several strategic sectors, marking a renewed chapter in the countries’ long-standing partnership.
The signing ceremony was held at the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs as part of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s official visit to France.
Liberia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sara Beysolow Nyanti, signed on behalf of the Government of Liberia, while Éléonore Caroit, France’s Minister Delegate for Francophony, International Partnerships, and French Nationals Abroad, signed for the French Republic.
The new agreement expands cooperation into multiple sectors, including: Education and youth empowerment, Agriculture and food security, Health and sanitation, Climate change and renewable energy, Forestry, biodiversity, and environmental protection and Sports development and cultural exchange.
At the signing ceremony, Officials from both governments say the cooperation framework will advance sustainable development, enhance institutional capacity, and improve the well-being of citizens in both countries.
During the ceremony, Minister Nyanti expressed Liberia’s gratitude for France’s “consistent and longstanding support,” noting its role in post-conflict recovery, capacity building, and peacebuilding efforts.
She also thanked the French Government for backing Liberia’s successful bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (2026–2027), describing it as a “reflection of trust and shared commitment to global peace and multilateralism.”
According to Nyanti, the new agreement aligns with President Boakai’s ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development, which prioritizes Agriculture, Roads, Rule of Law, Education, Sanitation, and Tourism.
“This framework represents a new chapter anchored on mutual respect, shared values, and future-focused cooperation,” Nyanti said.
In her remarks, Minister Caroit hailed Liberia’s commitment to diplomacy and regional peace efforts, stating that France stands ready to support the country during its Security Council tenure.
“Liberia’s leadership will contribute to peace, stability, and multilateral cooperation at the global level,” she said.
Both parties reflected on the historical ties between Liberia and France, reaffirming their intention to pursue collaboration in human development, climate action, governance reforms, youth empowerment, and cultural diplomacy.
The two delegations agreed to establish periodic consultations to track implementation of the agreement and explore new opportunities for coorperation particularly in the green economy and innovation sectors.
The signing concluded with expressions of goodwill and a shared commitment to strengthening Franco-Liberian relations.
The agreement signals a mutual determination to advance sustainable development, peacebuilding, and prosperity.
