Liberia on Friday joined nations across the globe in commemorating the 80th Anniversary of the United Nations, with President Joseph Nyuma Boakai reaffirming the country’s enduring commitment to peace, development, and human rights.
The event, held in Margibi County, brought together senior government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of international organizations, traditional leaders, and students under the theme “Better Together: 80 Years and More for Peace, Development and Human Rights.”
In his keynote address, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai reflected on Liberia’s historic role as one of the founding members of the United Nations, recalling the nation’s decision in 1945 to sign the UN Charter in San Francisco as “a deep expression of duty to humanity and to our common world.”
“As a nation, Liberia has always been committed to the ideals of the United Nations, and we take great pride in our legacy of advancing peace, security, and human rights,” President Boakai said. “Since its inception, the UN has been a cornerstone of global cooperation.”
The Liberian leader reaffirmed his government’s continued support for the UN’s mission and its core principles of equality, justice, and solidarity, describing the organization as “a beacon of hope and cooperation for all peoples and nations.”
Looking ahead, President Boakai highlighted Liberia’s upcoming term on the United Nations Security Council in 2026, emphasizing the need for collective action to address pressing global issues such as climate change, sustainable development, humanitarian crises, and conflict resolution.
“Liberia remains steadfast in its support for multilateralism and will continue to contribute to the efforts of the UN in achieving these goals,” he added.
The President also called for deeper collaboration with regional bodies, including the African Union (AU) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), noting that these partnerships are vital to building sustainable and equitable societies for future generations.
Reaffirming Liberia’s alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Boakai said his administration would continue to prioritize education, healthcare, economic growth, and climate action as the cornerstones of national development.
He extended appreciation to the United Nations Resident Coordinator, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and all partners who contributed to organizing the commemoration, stressing that Liberia’s progress depends on the “combined efforts of government, the diplomatic community, civil society, and citizens.”
“Liberia remains firm in its commitment to the values of the UN Charter, peaceful coexistence, human dignity, and social progress,” President Boakai concluded. “Together, we will keep working toward a future of prosperity, stability, and sustainable development for everyone.”
The event ended with a reaffirmation of Liberia’s pledge to global peace and security, as the nation looks to strengthen its voice in the international community and continue its partnership with the United Nations.
