The Liberia International Students Solidarity Movement (LISSM) is urgently
calling on the Government of Liberia to take immediate steps toward the
repatriation of Liberian students currently studying in India, citing
escalating tensions between India and Pakistan.
According to a statement issued by LISSM, Chairman Henscin Dehgar emphasized
that the growing conflict in the region poses significant threats to the safety
and well-being of Liberian nationals especially students residing in India for
educational and economic opportunities.
Chairman Dehgar expressed deep concern over what he described as “an
increasingly dangerous environment,” highlighting reports of death threats
and growing insecurity faced by Liberian students. “These students traveled
to India with the hope of acquiring quality education and returning home to
contribute to national development. Their lives must be protected at all
costs,” Dehgar stressed.
The LISSM statement warned that the use of heavy weaponry in the conflict
zones could result in serious health and safety risks for civilians, including
Liberians caught in the crossfire. The group stressed that swift governmental
intervention is critical to prevent a potential humanitarian crisis.
Adding to the urgency, Chairman Dehgar noted that Liberia does not have an
embassy in India, complicating efforts to provide immediate assistance. He
urged the Government of Liberia to explore diplomatic channels and coordinate
with international partners to ensure the safe return of its citizens.
In a message to the public, LISSM also called on all Liberians to unite in
support of their fellow citizens abroad. “This is a moment that requires
national solidarity. We must rally together to protect the lives of our future
leaders,” the statement read.
While urging swift action, Chairman Dehgar also sought to reassure concerned
families. “We are engaging through diplomatic means to ensure the safe and
peaceful return of our colleagues. Parents and loved ones should remain calm
and hopeful,” he said.
The Liberia International Students Solidarity Movement reaffirms its
commitment to advocating for the welfare of Liberian students globally and
continues to work with relevant authorities to address the current situation.
