In a landmark move toward sustainable development and energy independence, Green
Guard Eco Solutions has officially broken ground on Liberia’s first
waste-to-energy facility in Crozierville, Montserrado County.
The Carbon-Capture Waste-to-Energy Facility signals a new
era for clean energy and environmental stewardship in the country.
The groundbreaking ceremony drew a host of dignitaries, including Monrovia
City Mayor John Siafa, Paynesville City Mayor Roberts Bestman, and the
Superintendent of Montserrado County, as well as community members and key
stakeholders.
All gathered to witness the beginning
of a project poised to revolutionize waste management and renewable energy
production in Liberia.
Speaking at the event, Green Guard Eco Solutions Executive Director
Edward W. Karfiah described the initiative as a transformative milestone in
Liberia’s environmental journey.
He emphasized that the facility will turn a major waste disposal challenge
into a clean energy opportunity, significantly reducing greenhouse gas
emissions through advanced, proprietary anaerobic technology.
Developed in collaboration with the Government of Liberia and international
partners, the facility will convert municipal solid waste into usable energy,
diverting significant amounts of refuse from overcrowded landfills and
alleviating pressure on the country’s limited waste infrastructure.
Delivering the keynote address on behalf of Vice President Hon. Jeremiah
Kpan Koung, Chief of Staff Prince Menkalo Gbieu hailed the initiative as a bold
step toward climate responsibility and economic resilience.
He urged collaboration among government agencies including the Ministries of
Mines and Energy, the Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation, the Liberia
Electricity Corporation, and the Liberia Rural Renewable Energy Agency and
stressed the importance of public-private partnerships in achieving national
sustainability goals.
“The Vice President believes this initiative marks a new chapter in our
collective responsibility,” said Gbieu. “It transforms waste from a burden into
a valuable resource, generating electricity and raw materials for industries.”
The facility is designed to reflect the principles of a circular
economy, converting environmental liabilities into long-term
socioeconomic assets.
It aligns with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),
particularly Goals 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), 7 (Affordable and Clean
Energy), 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), 12 (Responsible Consumption
and Production), and 13 (Climate Action).
Also addressing the event, Deputy Minister for Budget at the Ministry of
Finance and Development Planning, Tenneh G. Brunson, reaffirmed the
government’s support.
She noted that energy access is a cornerstone of President Joseph Boakai’s ARRESt
agenda for inclusive development, and highlighted the facility’s
potential to enhance electricity access and drive national growth.
Community members expressed their gratitude during the ceremony, praising Green
Guard Eco Solutions for selecting Crozierville as the pilot location.
“This is a great help to our community,” one resident said,
“We’re proud to be the first in Liberia to generate electricity from
waste.”
As Liberia strides toward its climate and energy goals, the Crozierville
facility stands as a beacon of innovation, vision, and partnership—setting a
bold example for sustainable development across the region.
