Liberia has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with the United States during a high-level strategic dialogue held at the White House.
As part of said endeavor, Foreign Affairs, Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti, met with U.S. Secretary of State and Acting National Security Advisor, Marco Rubio, to advance shared priorities focused on economic development, migration reform, and strategic investment.
The meeting builds on the momentum from President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s landmark visit to U.S. President Donald Trump in July 2025, which set the tone for renewed engagement between the two nations.
During the discussions, Minister Nyanti highlighted Liberia’s readiness to partner with the United States on critical infrastructure projects, sustainable mineral development, and frameworks to enhance mobility between both countries.
“This government is determined to turn Liberia’s natural wealth into shared prosperity for all Liberians,” Nyanti stated.
She emphasized that Liberia’s stability, democratic principles, and commitment to reform position it as a dependable partner for responsible American investment.
Secretary Rubio welcomed Liberia’s proactive diplomatic outreach and praised ongoing cooperation through the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), which is supporting infrastructure projects that align with both U.S. investment goals and Liberia’s national development strategy.
Migration and mobility issues were a central focus of the meeting. Minister Nyanti briefed her U.S. counterparts on efforts by Liberia’s Presidential Taskforce to address long-standing U.S. immigration concerns.
Notably, while Liberia currently issues three-year visas to U.S. nationals, the U.S. has limited Liberian visa validity to one year since the country’s civil conflict.
In response, Secretary Rubio announced the United States’ intention to restore visa reciprocity across multiple categories, citing Liberia’s reform progress and commitment to fair and transparent migration practices.
The dialogue follows Minister Nyanti’s participation in a U.S. policy forum in late September, where she joined Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau to address regional mobility and migration challenges in Africa.
There, she emphasized Liberia’s leadership role in advancing inclusive and equitable migration policies.
“This engagement with the United States is not only a diplomatic success; it is a victory for every Liberian who believes in a future defined by opportunity, dignity, and progress,” Nyanti said following the White House meeting.
The talks concluded with a mutual agreement to deepen cooperation on migration system reform, address security-related migration issues, and explore avenues for transforming Liberia’s critical mineral resources into job opportunities and economic growth.
The Government of Liberia expressed appreciation for the renewed confidence shown by the United States and anticipates a new chapter of strategic cooperation grounded in shared values, peace, and prosperity.
