The Government of Liberia through the ministry of health Friday presented huge essential consignment of medical supplies to Grand Kru Bureau of Corrections and Rehabilitation .
The donation presented to superintendent Moses Alison, according to our correspondent is the first time of its kind.
The donation of the consignment of medical supplies include, health screening, treatment for predominant illness, and health education for inmates on personal hygiene and disease prevention.
Receiving the medical supplies, the superintendent of Grand Kru county Bureau of Corrections and Rehabilitation, Moses Alison expressed his gratitude to the Liberian government for the provision of the medical supplies to the institution.
He assures that the local staffs of BCR will work closely with health authority in the county to ensure that the medical supplies are utilize effectively for it’s intended purpose.
According to him, these resources are vital in addressing the pressing health care needs of the inmates including detainess, many whom are faced with challenges in accessing adequate medical attention.
Mr. Alison told this media outlet that, government’s effort to provide medical supplies is a step towards ensuring that inmates and detainees receive the care which reflects the government of Liberia commitment to improving living conditions for inmates and detainees in addressing health disparities that often exist within prison’s facilities across the country.
Grand Kru county is one of the counties without prison facility but operates from the headquarters of Liberia National Police detachment in the county withholding cell.
The facility contained thirty inmates who are currently languishing behind bars in a tight police cell.
The lack of prison facility in Grand Kru county has drawn the citizens and court actors attention and discribes the situation as worrisome.
The concern citizens emphasized that such undermines the criminal justice system in the county and wants local authorities swift intervention in a move to erect prison facility in the county.
