The Liberian House of Representatives has summoned officials of the Liberia Standards Authority to appear before Plenary next Tuesday amid growing concerns over the importation and sale of potentially unsafe products on the Liberian market.
The decision followed a communication submitted by Moima Briggs Mensah, who requested Plenary’s indulgence to invite the management of the Liberia Standards Authority to provide explanations regarding consumer safety, product standards, and regulatory enforcement.
In her communication addressed to House Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon and fellow lawmakers, Representative Mensah expressed concern over the increasing presence of imported products carrying labels written entirely in foreign languages and products allegedly entering the Liberian market without clear instructions or safety information for consumers.
The Bong County lawmaker specifically pointed to food items, fertilizers, chemicals, construction materials, and other imported goods that may pose health and safety risks if proper standards are not effectively enforced.
According to Representative Mensah, concerns raised by members of the public prompted her communication, especially regarding products being sold with labels that ordinary consumers cannot easily understand. She warned that such practices could expose citizens to potential health hazards and misuse of products due to inadequate information.
She further requested authorities of the Liberia Standards Authority to provide detailed information on measures being implemented to ensure imported goods entering Liberia contain English or bilingual labels that can be understood by Liberian consumers.
Representative Mensah also called for explanations on inspection procedures, enforcement mechanisms, penalties for violators, and compliance measures aimed at protecting consumers from potentially unsafe products.
Following deliberations, members of Plenary voted to summon officials of the standards authority to respond to the concerns raised and provide clarity on the institution’s oversight responsibilities.
The Liberia Standards Authority serves as Liberia’s principal standards and quality assurance institution, with responsibility for developing and enforcing national standards across various sectors.
Its functions include product inspections, laboratory testing, conformity assessments, quality assurance monitoring, and collaboration with other regulatory agencies to prevent substandard or hazardous products from entering the Liberian market.
Officials of the standards authority are expected to provide lawmakers and the public with greater insight into the institution’s operations and measures being taken to ensure consumer safety across Liberia.
