A former representative candidate for Maryland County Electoral District #2, Jasper Hne, has criticized Representative Frank Saah Foko of Montserrado County over what he described as “reckless and disrespectful” public remarks allegedly directed at Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung.
Recently speaking to journalists, Hne said he has closely followed several media appearances and public engagements in which Representative Foko reportedly made statements he considers abusive and unbecoming of a sitting lawmaker.
According to him, such remarks not only undermine the dignity of the Office of the Vice President but also contribute to what he termed a growing culture of political intolerance in Liberia.
“Elected officials must understand that their words carry weight,” Hne stressed. “Public statements that are insulting or inflammatory do not strengthen democracy; they weaken it.”
He emphasized that lawmakers and public officials have a responsibility to exercise restraint, maturity, and respect in their public communications, particularly when addressing national leaders and sensitive political matters.
Hne noted that while constructive criticism remains a cornerstone of democratic governance, it must be carried out in a manner that promotes national unity rather than deepening political divisions.
The former Representative candidate further warned that the continued use of inflammatory language by public officials could erode public confidence in government institutions and set a negative example for young people who look up to political leaders.
In furtherance, Hne has called on the leadership of the House of Representatives and other relevant authorities to take appropriate steps to ensure that political debates and disagreements are conducted within the bounds of decency and respect.
As of press time, Representative Frank Saah Foko had not publicly responded to Hne’s remarks.
