A devastating flood triggered by heavy rainfall on May 23 has displaced
several families in central Fish Town, leaving them homeless and in urgent need
of humanitarian support.
At least five households have been severely affected, suffering extensive
damage to property and the loss of critical livelihoods. Many victims have been
forced to seek temporary shelter with relatives or in abandoned buildings.
“I lost everything in the flood,” said Esther Wilson, a
37-year-old mother of four, currently taking refuge in the former headquarters
of the Coalition for Democratic Change. “My children and I need help right
now.”
Esther, who supports her family by selling goods sourced from local
businesses, said the flood destroyed nearly all her belongings. “All our
mattresses, clothes, including my childrenโs uniforms, shoes, and food are
gone. As a single mother, I donโt know where to start,” she said
tearfully.
Mohamed Keita, owner of Keita Wood Shop and head of the Chainsaw Union of
River Gee County, also suffered major losses. “All my tools and essential
documents have been destroyed,” he lamented.
Both Esther and Mohamed, along with other affected residents, are appealing
to individuals, local authorities, and humanitarian organizations for immediate
assistance. Currently, many are staying near a drainage area vulnerable to
further flooding with additional rain expected.
As of this report, no relief aid has reached the victims.
Jonah Kelvin Tarty, Disaster Coordinator for River Gee County, confirmed the
situation and stated that victim assessments will soon be submitted to the
central office for intervention. He also cited operational challenges,
including the lack of office space and resources, as obstacles to swift
response.
