Liberia’s Minister of Finance and Development Planning, Augustine Kpehe Ngafuan, has commended the progress being made at Grand Gedeh University, following a tour of the institution’s campus and several ongoing development projects in Zwedru.
Minister Ngafuan made the visit on Saturday as part of his broader engagement in Liberia’s Southeast, ahead of his scheduled appearance as Keynote Speaker at the 17th Anniversary celebration of William V. S. Tubman University in Harper, Maryland County, on Monday, September 14.
Upon arrival at Grand Gedeh University, Minister Ngafuan was received by the institution’s President, Dr. Eric Z. M. Gbotoe, alongside members of the university’s administration.
The visit provided the Finance Minister with an opportunity to observe the institution’s infrastructure, assess ongoing projects and gain firsthand insight into the university’s priorities for academic and institutional development.
During the tour, Minister Ngafuan inspected several facilities and development initiatives designed to strengthen the university’s physical infrastructure and improve the environment for teaching, learning, research and academic excellence.
The projects form part of broader efforts to expand access to higher education and create stronger academic institutions outside Liberia’s capital, Monrovia.
Speaking during the visit, Minister Ngafuan praised the university administration for the progress achieved so far and underscored the strategic importance of investing in higher education as Liberia seeks to strengthen its human capital and accelerate sustainable national development.
His remarks come against the backdrop of Liberia’s long-standing development challenges in education.
The country’s education system suffered extensive disruption during the civil wars of 1989–2003, with schools, universities and other public institutions damaged or weakened and many qualified professionals leaving the country.
Since the end of the conflict, successive Liberian governments and development partners have sought to rebuild the education sector, expand access and improve the quality of instruction.
Universities and colleges outside Monrovia have increasingly become important components of that effort by providing young Liberians with opportunities to pursue tertiary education closer to their communities.
The expansion of higher education in the Southeast is particularly significant for counties that have historically faced challenges associated with distance, transportation costs, limited infrastructure and concentration of educational opportunities in the capital.
For Grand Gedeh County, the development of a functioning university represents more than an expansion of educational infrastructure.
It also has the potential to contribute to the region’s economic and social transformation by producing teachers, health professionals, administrators, entrepreneurs, researchers and other skilled workers needed to support local development.
Minister Ngafuan’s visit therefore placed the university’s infrastructure development within the wider national conversation about human-capital investment, decentralization and inclusive growth.
The Finance Minister emphasized that institutions of higher learning must remain central to Liberia’s development strategy, particularly as the country seeks to build a workforce capable of supporting public-sector reform, private-sector expansion, technological advancement and improved delivery of essential services.
The visit also comes at a time when Liberia is continuing to pursue economic transformation through investment in infrastructure, education, health, agriculture and other productive sectors.
A stronger tertiary education system is widely regarded as an important foundation for ensuring that investments in these areas are matched by a skilled national workforce.
Minister Ngafuan’s engagement in the Southeast continues with his scheduled participation in the 17th Anniversary celebration of William V. S. Tubman University in Harper, Maryland County.
The anniversary provides another platform for discussions about Liberia’s higher education sector, particularly the role universities can play in producing skilled professionals and advancing research and innovation.
Established as a regional institution in southeastern Liberia, William V. S. Tubman University has become an important part of the country’s higher education landscape and serves students from Maryland and surrounding counties.
The connection between the two university engagements highlights a broader national objective: strengthening institutions of higher learning across Liberia rather than concentrating educational opportunities primarily in Monrovia.
For Grand Gedeh University, the Finance Minister’s visit offered an opportunity to showcase ongoing progress while drawing attention to the resources required to sustain institutional growth.
As Liberia continues rebuilding and modernizing its education system, universities face the dual challenge of expanding physical infrastructure while ensuring that facilities are matched by qualified faculty, modern learning resources, research capacity, laboratories, libraries and sustainable institutional financing.
Minister Ngafuan’s message was therefore broader than the progress observed during his campus tour. It underscored the argument that investment in education is an investment in Liberia’s future workforce and, ultimately, the country’s economic development.
The Grand Gedeh University visit ended with the Finance Minister expressing satisfaction with the progress observed and encouraging continued efforts to strengthen the institution’s capacity to serve students and contribute to national development.
