The True Whig Party (TWP), one of Liberia’s historic political institutions, has thrown its full support behind President Joseph Nyuma Boakai following his nationwide address on the emerging security situation along the Liberia–Guinea border, an issue raising concern across the Mano River sub-region.
In a carefully worded national statement delivered earlier this week, President Boakai reassured citizens of the government’s firm commitment to safeguarding Liberia’s territorial integrity, peace, and national security.
He emphasized that diplomatic channels remain the primary avenue for resolving the dispute, noting ongoing engagements with Guinea and regional bodies such as the Mano River Union.
A Region with a Fragile History
The Liberia–Guinea border stretches over approximately 563 kilometers (350 miles) and has historically been vulnerable to tensions, particularly during Liberia’s 1989–2003 civil wars, when cross-border movements of armed groups destabilized the region.
In recent decades, however, both countries have largely maintained peaceful relations, supported by regional peacekeeping frameworks and diplomatic cooperation.
Analysts note that even minor incidents along such historically sensitive borders can escalate quickly if not managed through coordinated diplomacy and security restraint.
TWP Backs “Calm and Strategic Leadership”
In a formal statement issued by its National Executive Committee under the leadership of its Standard Bearer, Eric W. Olson, the True Whig Party commended President Boakai’s approach as “calm, measured, and strategic.”
“We commend President Boakai for his thoughtful and methodical approach to resolving the situation through diplomatic channels, reflecting both maturity in leadership and a deep commitment to regional peace,” the party stated.
The TWP emphasized that diplomacy not confrontation remains the most effective tool for de-escalation in a region where economic interdependence and shared security challenges demand cooperation.
Concerns Over Alleged Military Incursions
Despite its support for the government’s approach, the party raised concerns about reports suggesting incursions by Guinean military personnel into Liberian territory.
While such claims have yet to be independently verified, the TWP warned that any violation of sovereignty could have serious implications.
Security experts point out that border communities often economically marginalized and reliant on cross-border trade are particularly vulnerable to disruptions.
According to regional estimates, over 60% of livelihoods in border zones depend on informal trade, making stability critical for economic survival.
The TWP cautioned that:
Unauthorized military movements risk escalating tensions
Civilian populations could face displacement or economic hardship
Bilateral relations between Liberia and Guinea may suffer long-term strain
Call for Regional and International Engagement
The party called on Guinea and broader international stakeholders to support ongoing diplomatic efforts.
It also stressed the importance of adhering to international law, including respect for sovereignty and territorial boundaries.
In particular, the TWP urged:
The immediate and unconditional withdrawal of any foreign troops from Liberian soil, if confirmed
Increased involvement of regional mediators such as the Mano River Union
Continued dialogue to prevent escalation into conflict
A Test for West African Stability
The situation is being closely monitored across West Africa, where regional blocs such as ECOWAS have historically intervened to prevent conflicts from spreading.
Liberia itself remains a key contributor to regional peacebuilding efforts, having transitioned from conflict to stability over the past two decades.
Political observers say President Boakai’s handling of the situation could shape Liberia’s diplomatic posture in the region and reinforce its role as a stabilizing force.
Appeal for National Unity
Reaffirming its commitment to peace and democratic governance, the True Whig Party called on Liberians to remain calm and avoid inflammatory rhetoric during this sensitive period.
The party emphasized that national unity will be critical in navigating the crisis, urging citizens to:
Remain law-abiding
Support government-led diplomatic efforts
Avoid actions that could heighten tensions

As Liberia continues its diplomatic engagement with Guinea and regional partners, the TWP expressed confidence that the dispute can be resolved peacefully.
Experts agree that sustained dialogue, coupled with regional cooperation mechanisms, offers the best chance of preserving stability in a region that has made significant strides since the early 2000s.
For now, the unfolding situation represents both a challenge and an opportunity: a test of leadership, diplomacy, and the resilience of West Africa’s peace architecture.
