President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr. has officially launched construction of the long-anticipated Western Corridor Highway Project, a transformative US$363.9 million road network designed to reshape transportation, commerce, and regional connectivity across western Liberia.
The ambitious project, spanning 255 kilometers, will cover five strategic road corridors across Montserrado, Bomi, Grand Cape Mount, and Lofa Counties, making it one of the largest road infrastructure investments in Liberia’s modern history.
Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony in Bo Waterside, President Boakai described the initiative as a turning point in Liberia’s national development agenda.
“This project will be built to international standards, with climate resilience, enhanced engineering, and a sustainable maintenance framework that will serve both present and future generations,” the President declared.
A Roadmap for National Transformation
The Western Corridor Highway forms part of the Boakai administration’s broader infrastructure modernization strategy aimed at unlocking economic potential, reducing rural isolation, and improving regional trade routes.
The project includes:
St. Paul Bridge to Klay – 38 km dual carriageway
Klay to Bo Waterside – 79 km single carriageway
Klay to Tubmanburg – 22 km
Madina to Robertsport – 30 km
Voinjama to Kolahun to Mendikorma – 86 km
Combined, the corridors total 255 kilometers of paved roadways connecting some of Liberia’s most commercially strategic and underserved areas.
Government officials say the network is expected to significantly cut travel time, lower transport costs, improve access to markets, and stimulate economic activity in agriculture, mining, tourism, and trade.
Regional Gateway to West Africa
President Boakai emphasized that the highway, together with the proposed Mano River and Kongo Corridors, will position Liberia as a critical gateway for trade within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the wider sub-region.
“This is about dignity and opportunity for our people,” Boakai said.
“It opens vital access routes, reduces transportation burdens, and connects communities that have long remained isolated.”
The corridor links Liberia’s western border with Sierra Leone, creating new possibilities for cross-border commerce and movement of goods and people.
Sierra Leone’s President Bio Hails Historic Initiative
Joining the event was Julius Maada Bio, who praised the project as a symbol of peace, cooperation, and regional progress.
“The 255-kilometer corridor represents the future of West Africa,” President Bio stated.
“It will connect nations, facilitate trade, and bring our peoples closer together.”
He added that the highway demonstrates the dividends of peace and regional partnership in a region increasingly focused on economic integration.
Innovative Financing Model
Officials disclosed that the project will be executed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Hybrid Annuity Model, combining Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) with Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) structures.
The model allows government and private investors to jointly finance, construct, maintain, and operate the road network over the long term, easing fiscal pressure while ensuring sustainability.
Construction is expected to last five years, after which tolling and maintenance systems will be introduced.
Historic Step for Rural Communities
For many communities in western Liberia, especially during the rainy season, road access has remained a decades-long challenge.
Entire towns often become inaccessible due to deteriorated feeder roads and poor transport infrastructure.
Analysts say the Western Corridor Highway could dramatically improve healthcare access, school attendance, food supply chains, and local business growth.
With construction now underway, many Liberians view the project as a historic step toward national renewal and a signal that large-scale infrastructure development is returning to the forefront of government priorities.
