President Joseph Nyuma Boakai and Vice President Jeremiah Koung have pledged stronger government support for the “I Love Liberian Rice” initiative, as efforts intensify to boost domestic rice production and reduce reliance on imports.
The commitment was made during a high-level meeting at the Executive Mansion with Bishop Robert Bimba, Chief Executive Officer of the Community of Hope Agriculture Project (CHAP).
Discussions focused on scaling up sustainable rice farming and expanding access to arable land across the country.
Bishop Bimba emphasized CHAP’s readiness to significantly increase output using the System of Rice Intensification (SRI), an innovative farming approach known for improving yields while conserving water and other resources.
He called on the government to allocate swamp lands in Zubah Town and others to ensure long-term agricultural growth.
He also urged authorities to lead by example by prioritizing locally produced rice at official events and presenting it as state gifts, moves he said would strengthen national pride and support Liberian farmers.
President Boakai, in response, praised the quality and packaging of locally produced rice, describing the initiative as a symbol of national resilience and self-sufficiency.
He directed Vice President Koung to work closely with CHAP to address land access challenges, particularly in Zubah Town.
Meanwhile, CHAP’s leadership expressed gratitude to international partners, including Concern Worldwide and Welthungerhilfe, for their continued support in advancing the initiative and strengthening Liberia’s agricultural sector.
The “I Love Liberian Rice” campaign is part of broader national efforts to empower local farmers, enhance food security, and stimulate economic growth through agriculture.
