Monrovia, Sept. 24, 2025 – Former Liberian President George Manneh Weah narrowly escaped harm early Wednesday morning when a sudden fire ripped through his 9th Street residence in Sinkor, adding to a troubling series of blazes that have struck senior figures of the opposition Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) since 2024.

The midnight inferno, which eyewitnesses say started in the former president’s bedroom, prompted Mr. Weah to call his neighbors for help. Residents rushed in and fought the flames before the Liberia Fire Service arrived. The Acting Chairman of the CDC, Janga Kowo, described the damage as “massive” and said the incident raises serious concerns about the safety of the former president.

Although newsmen were barred from entering the compound, officials confirmed that Mr. Weah was unharmed. Fire trucks and an ambulance were later seen leaving the premises as investigators probed the cause.

This is not the first time prominent CDC officials have seen their homes go up in flames; in February 2024 – The Montserrado residence of Senator Saah H. Joseph was gutted by fire, with neighbors rescuing those trapped inside. In April 2024 – The home of Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa, then-Speaker of the House of Representatives, was destroyed in a blaze that forced his family to flee for safety.

The fire at Mr. Weah’s Sinkor residence now marks the third high-profile case in less than two years, fueling speculation about whether these incidents are mere coincidences or signs of a deeper threat.
