For the first time in the nationโs history, Liberia is taking a bold and structured step to respond to the rising threat of climate-induced migration.
On June 17, 2025, the Executive Director and CEO of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Dr. Emmanuel King Urey Yarkpawolo, signed a landmark agreement at the Berlin Climate Mobility Forum, launching Liberiaโs journey toward developing a National Climate Mobility Strategy.
The agreement paves the way for the EPA to conduct a comprehensive Climate Mobility Assessment a major move that will examine how climate change is forcing people to relocate within Liberia and what policies must be put in place to protect them.
The signing took place during a high-level session at the Berlin forum, attended by global climate leaders, policymakers, and civil society actors.
Liberiaโs participation and leadership at the forum demonstrated not only its vulnerability but also its commitment to solutions.
โClimate change is no longer a distant threat it is a current reality that is reshaping lives and livelihoods,โ said Dr. Urey Yarkpawolo. โThrough this agreement, we are committing to assess the scale and nature of climate-induced mobility and to craft a national strategy that safeguards vulnerable communities while ensuring sustainable development.โ, he told the gathering.
The Climate Mobility Assessment will involve among other things, the ๐๐๐ญ๐ก๐๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐๐๐ญ๐ ๐จ๐ง ๐๐ญ-๐ซ๐ข๐ฌ๐ค ๐ฉ๐จ๐ฉ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ฌ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐ซ๐๐๐ฌ, the ๐๐จ๐ฅ๐๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ง๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐๐ฅ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐จ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ง๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ ๐๐จ๐ง๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ญ๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ฌ, ๐๐๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ฆ๐จ๐ฏ๐๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ ๐ญ๐ซ๐๐ง๐๐ฌ ๐ฅ๐ข๐ง๐ค๐๐ ๐ญ๐จ ๐๐ง๐ฏ๐ข๐ซ๐จ๐ง๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ๐๐ฅ ๐ข๐ฆ๐ฉ๐๐๐ญ๐ฌ and ๐๐ง๐ญ๐๐ ๐ซ๐๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐๐ฅ๐ข๐ฆ๐๐ญ๐ ๐ฆ๐จ๐๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ ๐ข๐ง๐ญ๐จ ๐๐ข๐ฌ๐๐ฌ๐ญ๐๐ซ ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐๐ง๐ง๐ข๐ง๐ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐๐ฏ๐๐ฅ๐จ๐ฉ๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ ๐ฉ๐จ๐ฅ๐ข๐๐ข๐๐ฌ.
At the same time, The findings will guide the creation of Liberiaโs first ever National Climate Mobility Strategy a long-term plan that ensures those displaced by climate disasters are not forgotten or left behind.
Held under the theme โPathways to Protection: Addressing Climate Mobility through Policy and Practice,โ the Berlin Climate Mobility Forum gave Liberia a global stage to raise awareness and secure partnerships.
This move aligns with Liberiaโs obligations under the Paris Agreement and shows that the country is not waiting for disaster to strike before taking action. Instead, it is stepping up, showing leadership, and preparing its systems and communities for the future.
โThis is the first time in Liberiaโs history that a focused, data-driven initiative will be undertaken to understand and address climate induced migration. It is not just a policy move it is a people-first strategy to ensure that climate justice reaches every corner of the country, โDr. Urey Yarkpawolo added.
