The Board of Commissioners of the Liberia Telecommunications Authority in its confirmation hearing on Monday July 21,2025 attributed significant inadequate network stability to the use of counterfeit phones operating in the country.

Chairman-Designate of the Board Clarence Massaquoi told Senators in session that most often the poor internet power experienced by users are not solely caused by internet providers but the devices being used.

He stated that the effectiveness of network can depend on the carrier and most of the phones being sold in Liberia seem to have poor carriers.

“Honorable Senators we have come to realize that poor internet connectivity in Liberia is not only from network providers but mostly caused by fake phones”

Nominee Massaquoi lamented that the country market is filled with poorly manufactured phones that do not meet appropriate standards for good network performance.

He told the committee of his intention to tackle such problem when confirmed to his position designated.

The LTA Commissioner said to address such issue, his team will set a system that tracks all phones imported in the counter and determine their level of productivity.

According to him, such will help them to stop the importation of phones that do not meet the set standards of quality services to Liberia.

He urged the Senate to provide him the opportunity to improve the network services in Liberia through strategic networking and partnerships.
