The Government of Liberia, through the National Commission on Arms, has announced the commencement of a nationwide firearms registration exercise for civilians authorized to possess and use firearms.

Speaking at the Ministry of Information’s regular press briefing on Thursday in Monrovia, the Chairman of the Arms Commission, James Fromayan, said the exercise is in line with the Act establishing the Commission, as well as Executive Order #141 issued by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai on February 24, 2025. The order mandates the registration of all civilian-held firearms across the country.

According to Fromayan, the new policy will issue two types of permits:

A Firearm Acquisition Permit, which allows a civilian to legally obtain and own a firearm within the Republic of Liberia.

A Firearm Possession License, which authorizes the holder to retain and use the firearm legally.

Chairman Fromayan also emphasized that individuals seeking to register firearms must provide proof of basic training in firearm handling and safety.

He stated that those unable to present such documentation will be required to undergo competency training conducted by the Liberia National Police.

He further outlined that the Commission is in the final stages of preparing for the registration exercise and that public awareness efforts will be intensified in the coming weeks to ensure a smooth process.

The initiative marks a significant step in strengthening arms control and ensuring responsible firearm ownership in Liberia.
