The Resident Bishop of the Liberia Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, Samuel J. Quire Jr., has delivered a powerful call to action to graduates of United Methodist University (UMU), urging them to anchor their futures in faith, integrity, and service to humanity.
Speaking as keynote address at the institution’s 21st Commencement Convocation, Bishop Quire challenged the Class of 2026 to view their academic achievements not merely as personal success, but as a mandate to contribute meaningfully to national development and global progress.
In a deeply reflective and inspirational address, the Bishop described the graduates’ academic journey as one defined by resilience, sacrifice, and divine grace.
He acknowledged the many hurdles faced by students, including financial hardship, academic pressures, and moments of uncertainty challenges that mirror the broader realities confronting young people across developing nations.
“Your journey has not been easy,” Bishop Quire declared.
“There were moments when the path seemed uncertain and the obstacles overwhelming.
Yet through faith and determination, you persevered. Today, your achievement stands as a living testimony that indeed, ‘God did it.’”
Drawing on the class theme, “Gala Kel El” translated as “God Did It”; he urged graduates to remain spiritually grounded as they transition into professional and civic life. He emphasized that recognizing divine guidance is essential not only for personal growth but also for ethical leadership.
A Call for Values-Driven Leadership
Bishop Quire stressed that Liberia and the wider world requires leaders who combine intellectual competence with moral clarity.
He cautioned against defining success solely by financial gain or social status, instead encouraging graduates to measure their impact through service, integrity, and the positive transformation of communities.
“The world you are entering presents both vast opportunities and serious challenges,” he noted.
“Let your success be measured not by wealth or title, but by the lives you uplift and the principles you uphold.”
He further called on the graduates to become agents of transformation in sectors ranging from governance and business to education and healthcare.
According to him, sustainable progress depends on leaders who embody accountability, compassion, and a commitment to the common good.
Recognizing Sacrifice and Commitment
The ceremony also served as a moment of appreciation for the collective effort behind the graduates’ success.
Bishop Quire paid tribute to parents and guardians for their sacrifices, often made under difficult economic conditions, as well as to the university’s faculty and administration for their dedication to academic excellence and character formation.
“To the parents and guardians, your unwavering support has made this day possible,” he said.
“And to the faculty and administration, your commitment continues to shape future leaders and strengthen the foundation of our society.”
A Message Beyond Liberia
While the address was rooted in the Liberian context, its message resonated far beyond national borders.
In an era marked by global uncertainty, economic disparities, and ethical challenges in leadership, Bishop Quire’s remarks echoed a broader call for values-based education and responsible citizenship.
In his concluding remarks, Bishop Quire urged the graduates to remain steadfast in their faith and to seek divine guidance in all their endeavors, reminding them that true strength and purpose come from a higher calling.
“As you move forward, remember the values instilled in you,” he concluded. “Carry your faith, serve with purpose, and let your lives reflect the enduring truth that in all things, God remains the source of your strength.”
The 21st Commencement Convocation brought together academic leaders, government officials, religious figures, and proud families in a vibrant celebration of achievement, marking another milestone for United Methodist University as it continues to contribute to Liberia’s human capital development.
